HEALTH DEPARTMENT HOSTS SECOND EASTERN CAPE RESEARCH CONFERENCE

The Department of Health in Eastern Cape will be hosting the second Eastern Cape Research Conference at the University of Transkei on 24 -
26 August 2000.The Theme of the Conference is Collaborative Research: A Challenge for Health Professionals.

It is coordinated by the Eastern Cape Health Research Committee which came into existence early in 1998.The invitation was extended to the
following institutions:-

University of Transkei
 University of Port Elizabeth
 Vista University
 University of Fort Hare
 Rhodes University
 Border Technikon
 PE Technikon

These institutions are now formally represented and are active participants of the Eastern Cape Health Research Committee. This initiative
was based on the following motivations:-

A lot of research is being carried out but not coordinated.

* People involved in similar studies can interact.
* Foster better understanding between DoH and the provincial tertiary Institutions.
* Increasing the capacity of our institutions through collaborative research.

In the previous conference held late 1999 in University of Port Elizabeth, it was agreed that the research conference should be held on a
rotational basis among these institutions.

This years conference will focus on the research that has been conducted in 1999 in Eastern Cape, both completed and ongoing, with a view
to use the results for planning. The target group is all the Health Program Managers at provincial and district levels; academics and all
interested people in health research.

There will also be a Pre-conference Workshop on 24th August 2000, whose main objective is to acquaint Program and District Managers with
research Methodology so that they can be able to write proposals and also prioritise and also use the information for planning health
services.

The Faculty of Heath Sciences at Unitra is facilitating this conference. It is also expected that international actors such as World Health
Organisation will be represented.

The MEC for Health Dr BM Goqwana will open the conference.

Interested people from all sectors are invited to attend this prestigious event.
